Ocean Tiles

Bathroom tiles in the old house, finished in 2018. The sea creatures and plants are hand made, while the background is granite, marble and seashells .

Completed and cleaned. The dark charcoal grout is a favorite.

I searched through my ocean images to find the ones I love best.

I replaced the old sink and made a new counter top. A plumber aligned the new drain pipe.

Before grouting. The mermaid clock on the wall echoes the theme.

Kitchen Tile Backsplash

The majority of these tiles were hand glazed commercial white bisque. The dark teal accents were from the home store while the nature images are from a book on flowering plants of New Mexico. The process of creating the plant images was so time consuming that I changed plans, incorporating specialty glazes on many tiles, which worked well because they look organic. Another project from the old house, completed about 2015.

Here is the stove side. I balanced the plant images with solid celadon and 3 different crystal glazed groups of tiles.

This is the right side of the sink. Because I was teaching full time, it took me several years of summer work to get nearly 300 tiles glazed.

Left side of the sink. I used white unsanded grout.

Southwest Tile Mural

This was my first large mural, finished about 2015. I worked on it off and on for years. The terra cotta clay shows its beautiful natural colors in the areas below. It is about 9' wide by 7' tall. Below each star and the moon are holders for tea lights which illuminate the white above when lit.

It makes a nice tile surround for the pellet stove.

Detail. You can see the armadillo peeking out from behind the stove.
